Citrus Bowl Renovations To Start By 2014

This morning, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs announced their new deal to start a planned $175 million renovation of the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium by 2014. It's great news for the Russell Athletic Bowl, as it means the long-awaited fixes -- which will amount to basically an entirely new stadium for a fraction of the price -- will be in place during the next contract cycle.

Every Fresh Start Involves Ordering New Business Cards

Today and tomorrow, we embark on the daunting task of replacing eight years' worth of logos. Shirts, signage, stationary...probably some other things that don't begin with s.
This is the bowl's first name change in eight years, the longest stretch in an admittedly patchwork title history. By the time Florida Citrus Sports purchased the game in 2001, it had seen four different names (Blockbuster Bowl, Carquest Bowl, MicronPC Bowl and MicronPC.com Bowl). At the time, it was among the lowest tier of bowl games in a field of 25.
Starting in 2001 it became the Tangerine Bowl, a throwback to the old days of Orlando's original bowl game (now the Capital One Bowl). We had two title sponsors under the Tangerine name (Visit Florida and Mazda) before Champs Sports came on board in 2004 and helped bring the game to the next level.

It's an exciting (and hectic) day at Florida Citrus Sports as we finally flip the switch on the Russell Athletic Bowl. This process has been bubbling for a couple of months now but it's just like bowl week: no amount of late nights and early mornings can avoid the pandemonium of game day (or in this case, launch day). It's straight downhill today; forget the breaks and just worry about steering.

Virginia and Virginia Tech square off this weekend for the right to play for the ACC title and a BCS bowl-berth. The Hokies hold the edge with only one conference loss, but the Cavaliers would own the tiebreaker with a win at home on Saturday. Tech hasn’t lost to its rival from Charlottesville in eight years and has only dropped one game to the Cavs since 1998.

An intriguing weekend across the Big East and ACC starts early with a pair of
Friday night games with Champs Sports Bowl implications. All three of the conference leaders in the Big East - Cincinnati, Rutgers and
West Virginia - all hit the road this week against league opponents. Tonight,
the Scarlet Knights travel to Louisville and the Mountaineers visit Syracuse.
Tomorrow afternoon, the Bearcats are in Tampa to meet USF. If all three maintain
their unblemished conference records, we may not know our Big East options until
later in the season when the three teams play each other. However, it's possible
that one might stumble on this "road test weekend" and help narrow our
possibilities.

Now that the first BCS standings have been released, it's time to start up one
of our (ok, my) favorite games around the office: If The Season Ended Today. We're not PROJECTING the bowls; we're treating the current poll like the final one, so you can get a better idea of how the bowl process works.

One week after Wake Forest shook up the ACC Atlantic division, the other side of
the conference experienced some upheaval. Two upsets in the Coastal changed the
face of the division race while the Atlantic returned (somewhat) to status quo.
Meanwhile, the Big East remains in a sort of limbo as contenders continue to
dance around each other.

ACC Results

Miami 30, UNC 24
Virginia 24, Georgia Tech 21
Virginia Tech 38, Wake

BCS Standings - 10/16/11

The first Bowl Championship Series standings of the season are released, and that takes us one step closer to Selection Sunday.

There's still half a season to be played, but now bowl projections and possible pairings can be discussed without the Way Too Early prefix. Although really, anything prior to the last week of the season is still Too Early, if history is any indication.

Let's check the first standings:

1. LSU Tigers
2. Alabama Crimson Tide
3. Oklahoma Sooners
4. Oklahoma State Cowboys
5. Boise State Broncos
6. Wisconsin Badgers
7. Clemson Tigers
8. Stanford Cardinal
9. Arkansas Razorbacks
10. Oregon Ducks
11. Kansas State Wildcats
12. Virginia Tech Hokies
13. Nebraska Cornhuskers
14. South Carolina Gamecocks
15. West Virginia Mountaineers
16. Michigan State Spartans
17. Texas A&M Aggies
18. Michigan Wolverines
19. Houston Cougars
20. Auburn Tigers
21. Penn State Nittany Lions
22. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
23. Illinois Fighting Illini
24. Texas Longhorns
25. Washington Huskies

That's six teams from the Big Ten, five from the SEC, three from the ACC and one from the Big East.

On the Capital One Bowl front, that means there are a lot of options to choose the right match-up. We'd be choosing from everyone except LSU and Alabama on the SEC side and everyone but Wisconsin (and likely Nebraska) on the Big Ten side.

Things are even more wide open on the ACC side. Virginia Tech is right at #12 and could be on the verge of a BCS berth, but there are a number of teams that could snatch that spot. The remaining ranked team in the conference is Georgia Tech. With West Virginia as the only ranked team in the Big East and (at the moment) presumptive champion, our choices may not be dictated by the rankings so much as other factors like records and head-to-head wins.

We'll go more in depth on the what-ifs tomorrow.

to Selection Sunday.

Weekend Champs Sports Bowl Spotlight - 10/8

Both of our partner conferences are in the thick of league play this weekend as
the championship races start to take shape.

With current ACC division leaders Clemson (Atlantic) and Georgia Tech (Coastal)
at home against Boston College and Maryland, respectively, a pair of games -
Florida State at Wake Forest and Miami at Virginia Tech - are almost critical to
keep pace before entering the second half of the year.

In the Big East, preseason favorite West Virginia opens conference play against
Connecticut, but another game, Pittsburgh at Rutgers, features the two teams
atop the standings after one week. The Panthers and Scarlet Knights are our Game
of the Week.

Additionally, Notre Dame returns to South Bend to host a tough Air Force team.

Florida Citrus Sports selection committee members will be on the road this
weekend representing the Champs Sports Bowl at all of those games above, plus
Louisville at North Carolina and Central Michigan at NC State.

Week 5 was a light one for teams in the ACC and Big East, but the biggest games
of the weekend might have an impact far beyond the teams playing in them. Our
Champs Sports Bowl representatives have been on the road up and down the east
coast meeting with fans and officials from our partner schools as we prepare for
the second bowl season under the current conference pairings that give us the
second team from the Big East (first after BCS) and the third team from the ACC
(second after BCS).
Here are the big stories from last weekend and our most recent Team Selection
Committee meeting:

One week after Clemson's upset of preseason-No. 5 Florida State in Death Valley, the No. 15 Tigers take their high-octane offense on the road to meet another ACC power, No. 10 Virginia Tech. It's our Champs Sports Bowl Game of the Week and it tops the weekend slate of games in our partner conferences for the CSB.
