Florida State and Virginia both remain in the ACC title hunt as they clash in Tallahassee this weekend. The Seminoles can only hope for a share of the Atlantic division title, having lost the potential tie-breaker to current leader Clemson earlier this season. The Cavaliers, however, still have a shot at winning the Coastal division outright. Both teams enter the game with 7-3 records and two conference losses.

ACC power Virginia Tech clashes with conference rival Georgia Tech Thursday in a matchup of Coastal division leaders. Since the ACC moved to 12 teams in 2005, only the Hokies and Yellow Jackets have represented the Coastal division in the conference title game. Although Virginia still controls its own destiny, the winner of this weekend's “Battle of the Techs” should have the inside track at yet another appearance in the ACC Championship Game.

Notre Dame looks to finish strong in the final stretch of the season as the team travels to Winston-Salem to face Wake Forest this Saturday. Despite being all but eliminated from BCS contention, the Irish are a favorite to compete in the Champs Sports Bowl, according to expert projections. Wake Forest also has a shot at the Champs Sports Bowl as the ACC race remains wide open behind current one-loss division leaders Clemson and Virginia Tech.

No. 25 West Virginia looks to regain its position as the Big East favorite when the team travels to Piscataway to face Rutgers in its second-consecutive road game. Both the Mountaineers and Scarlet Knights enter Saturday’s game with 5-2 records, each holding one Big East loss (both suffered last Friday night.) West Virginia has claimed at least a share of the conference title five of the last eight years.

Southern California and Notre Dame battle for the historic Jeweled Shillelagh this weekend in one of college football’s most storied rivalries. The two teams have met 82 times since 1926. USC’s eight-game winning streak was snapped last season when Trojan receiver Ronald Johnson dropped a wide-open pass in the waning moments that likely would have won the game for Southern Cal. Instead, first year Irish Coach Brian Kelly took the shillelagh back to South Bend for the first time since 2001.

Upstart Wake Forest welcomes No. 21 Virginia Tech to Winston-Salem this week in a pivotal ACC matchup of one-loss teams. The Demon Deacons are coming off of a stunning win against then-No. 23 Florida State, the team’s first victory against a ranked opponent in five tries. The Hokies squeezed by Miami last week when quarterback Logan Thomas scored with under a minute to play in the fourth quarter.

The Big East picture will become a little clearer this week as Pittsburgh travels to Piscataway to face Rutgers. Both teams top the early season standings with 1-0 records, while conference favorite West Virginia opens league play this week. Pitt beat an emotionally-drained Rutgers squad by 20 points last year. It was the Scarlet Knights first game after defensive lineman Eric LeGrand was paralyzed while attempting to make a tackle against Army. This season’s matchup possesses different story lines, as Rutgers tries to solve a quarterback quandary and Pittsburgh searches for offensive dimension.

No. 15 Clemson takes its undefeated record on the road this week to face off with fellow-unbeaten No. 10 Virginia Tech in a rare ACC battle of top-15 teams. Thanks to quality wins against Auburn and Florida State, the Tigers continue to climb the polls after beginning the year unranked. The Hokies were pegged as a darkhorse national title contender early on, despite the loss of four-year starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor to graduation.

The past two ACC Atlantic Division champions square off this weekend in a pivotal conference matchup as Clemson welcomes Florida State to Tiger Stadium and Death Valley. The Seminoles and Tigers have split the last 10 games in the series, with the home team winning each of the last four. FSU has not won at Clemson in a decade, but secured a victory in Tallahassee last year when kicker Dustin Hopkins booted a 55-yard field goal as time expired. Quarterback E.J. Manuel got the start for the ‘Noles in place of the injured Christian Ponder and scored his team’s only touchdown in the 16-13 win.

Old foes clash in College Park this week as Maryland plays host to Mid-Atlantic rival West Virginia. The schools, separated by just 200 miles, often battle over recruiting territory and area bragging rights. West Virginia holds a slight edge in the head-to-head matchup, winning the past five contests against the Terrapins. Maryland looks to rebound in the series after a strong performance in week one against ACC opponent Miami.

Rutgers at North Carolina is the Champs Sports Bowl Game Of The Week

Week two of the college football season picks up significantly for both Rutgers and North Carolina as the schools face off in a Big East-ACC battle. Both teams opened the 2011 campaign against non-BCS programs and cruised to lopsided victories. UNC is a popular pick for this year’s Champs Sports Bowl after a stunning double-overtime win against Tennessee in last season’s Music City Bowl. Rutgers, returning 17 starters from a year ago, could be a surprise in the Big East.

South Florida at Notre Dame is the Champs Sports Bowl Game Of The Week

This season, pick who you think will win the Champs Sports Bowl Game of the Week and WIN! Answer the question on the Champs Sports Bowl Facebook page before Saturday's game. If you pick correctly, you'll be entered into a drawing to win two tickets to the Champs Sports Bowl on December 29, 2011!
First meeting
The 2011 season kicks off with a homecoming of sorts as South Florida head coach Skip Holtz returns to his alma mater for a showdown with Brian Kelly and Notre Dame. Last year, the Bulls and Irish were late contenders for the Champs Sports Bowl before West Virginia’s 9-3 record proved too good to pass up. Expectations are higher for both teams this season and both are mentioned in preseason Champs Sports Bowl predictions, so an early-season game like this could have an impact on Selection Sunday in December.
USF looks to improve on last year’s 8-5 finish in its second year under Holtz. The Bulls have not won more than nine games in a single season since moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in 1997. Redshirt junior B.J. Daniels returns as starting quarterback following one of the best performances of his career against Clemson in the Meineke Car Care Bowl (20-of-27 with two touchdowns plus another score on the ground). That game was a breakthrough for a team with a mixed record against BCS conference opponents. Although they have pulled upsets against Florida State and Miami on the road in the past two seasons, the Bulls were throttled by a middling Florida team in Gainesville last September.
With an early-season gauntlet that also features Michigan, Michigan State and Pittsburgh, Notre Dame will need an early spark to “stir the echoes” in Kelly’s second season. It hopes to find that spark in senior quarterback Dayne Crist, who was recently named the starter over sophomore Tommy Rees. Crist is returning from a knee injury that ended his 2010 season in October and his ability to understand Kelly’s spread offense will be key this year. Though many Irish fans have their eyes on a BCS berth, pundits are preaching caution and expecting a stop in Orlando this December before they become national championship contenders.
This will be Holtz’s first time standing on the visitors’ sideline in South Bend. A former Irish walk-on, he served under coaching legends Bobby Bowden and Earle Bruce before taking an assistant coaching position with his father, Lou, from 1990-1993.
Extra Points: Notre Dame last played in Orlando in 2000, beating Navy, 45-14. South Florida has been in Orlando twice to play UCF (winning both times), but only one of those games (2006) was played in the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium.
